Does the internal HDD get fragmented?

I know that on pc systems the HDD’s can get very fragmented and this affects performance.  Is that the case with this aswell or does it perform so sort of defrag?  Or maybe there is a tool that remotely defags drives (safely!).  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sam

On a hard drive where the OS resides things are constantly being moved around, programs installed and uninstalled, files created, resized and deleted, etc…operations that  leave holes in the disk continuity. This is what causes fragmentation. On a static storage drive, unless you are routinely copying and deleting files to it most of the data is stored contiguously and fragmentation is of little concern.

Thanks for the the answer
