Does My Computer need to be on to Access the MBL?

I’m a prospective buyer and wanted an NAS that I can leave on even when my PC is sleeping or off and be able to access it  with my iPad 2 to listen to music and watch videos. Can that be done?

that’s exactly what I’m doing right now! So, this will work for you to.
Edit: I’m using a iPad1, which should not matter.
