Does it really have to be this complicated and difficult or am I missing something?

I have a PR4100 With a share folder and the subordinate folders, Pictures, videos and music folders and under these folders are more organizational folders. I’ve been using this setup for some time for myself as a repository for family and personal information and it has worked great.

Recently I decided to share a subordinate folder “Family Photos” with my son. I created him as a user with read only rights and turned off Public for the Top level share. All I want to do is drill down to the specific “Family Photos” folder and grant him read access to this specific folder only. Probably the most basic administrative task possible. I can’t figure this out and YouTube and WD Help have been zero help.

What am I missing here? Am I expecting too much from this device?

In the MyCloud web interface for your PR4100:

  1. Select the “Shares” tab
  2. Select the “Family Photos” share
  3. Slide the “Public” switch to “OFF” (in “Share Profile” section)[1]
  4. Select the “Read” icon (looks like an Eye) for your sons user (in “User Access” section)
  5. Select the “Read/Write” icon (looks like a Pen and Paper) for the “admin” user.

  1. When turning off Public access, the PR4100 is selecting “No Access” (looks like a blue solid circle with a cross in the middle) for ALL users. ↩︎

If I have this right, you have a top level Share, then Pictures, Videos, Music as subfolders, then Family Photos as a subfolder under Pictures? What is the name of the Share?

You turned off “Public” at the top level share, and gave your son’s account read-only access to the Share?

Without me guessing, what exactly is the problem?

Does he have no access? Or does he still have access to the top level folders?
