DLNA Video Streaming Problem

Hi All,

I have a 3TB MyBook Live running firmware version 02.43.03-022. I have a constant problem when streaming video to my PS3, TV etc whereby if I pause the video for longer than a few minutes, when I try to restart the video the stream fails and I have to start the video from the beginning - extremely annoying when the WD DLNA server doesn’t appear to support fast forwarding.

From what I’ve read on this forum, the Twonky server may be better, but I can’t seem to access it. Not sure if this is because my NAS doesn’t have the TwonkyMedia server installed or doesn’t meet one of the necessary preconditions. When I try to run the  Twonky5MediaServerPatch.deb patch I get an ‘invalid firmware package’ error.

I’d very much appreciate any help which the community could offer on how to resolve my ‘pausing’ error, or how to get the Twonky server up and running so I can at least fast forward when the stream fails!

I have done a lot of work with helping twonky users on mbl’s

and have noticed recently there are a lot of users in scenarios like yours

in which they cant switch to twonky out of the box, or after a firmware upgrade

WD

why are you selling MBL’s that state they have twonky on the box but are comming with WD DLNA installed by default?

why are you not letting users run the Twonky5MediaServerPatch.deb to switch to Twonky?

what can we do about this?

Are they?   I don’t remember seeing anything about Twonky on the box  (and I have two MBLs that came with it.)

Looking at the Box Art on Amazon doesn’t show it (on the three sides that are visible, at least.)

Thanks for the replies.

Is it known whether MBLs do still include the Twonky server, or whether only older units up to a certain as-shipped firmware version have this? If the latter, I’d be curious to know whether it is possible to procure a separate Twonky licence, or whether I’m stuck with the (apparently flawed) WD DLNA server.

Out of interest, has anyone else experienced the problem of the video stream failing if paused for any length of time? I’ve does some searches and can’t finad any reference to such an issue.

Any advice appreciated.

If you only have DLNA server and not Twonky on your MBL, then you can easily install Twonky yourself.  I have a MBLDuo and it only comes with DLNA, so i turned off DLNA in the dashboard and then i purchased a Twonky licence and installed Townky myself.  There is an excellent guide on how to intall Twonky on this forum and also a guide on the wikiforum

Agreed, but for those that didnt, thats kind of bad deal on the part of WD

Also, there is this guide

I am not at home to verify whether its on the box or not,

but I know mine says it on the box, also, it mentions that twonky is the media server in the manual

The current manual has definetly been updated, to refelct the fact that they stopped using twonky

Firmwae versions prior to 02.40.xx used TwonkyMedia as the media server.

Well, since no WD products ship with manuals, I’m not sure why you’d be referencing an “older” manual with respect to your MBL.  :)

…or was the manual on the included CD?

Im not referencing an older manual

It is the current one WD is linking to from its own web site

From here click on support

then click on user manual

Its likely that any units sold after the update did not include twonky. The firmware upgrade allowed users to choose which server they wanted to use via the patches. It also allowed you to return to twonky if you wanted to. Note the firmware update did not enforce the WD server on you. I updated the firmware but made the choice to remain with twonky which I am still running.

Info from WD

My Book Live drives that have been upgraded to firmware version 02.41.05-034 offer the option to switch between two different DLNA servers:  TwonkyMedia  or  WD’s DLNA Media Server. The benefit of upgrading to the newer WD’s DLNA Media Server is to gain full Windows 8 certification and to take advantage of WD’s App for Windows 8. The patches below provide the choice of using either DLNA server, and the option to switch back to the other server by simply applying one of the patches.

Supported My Book Live Firmware:
The patches to switch Media Servers will only work if the following conditions are met:

  • The My Book Live already has Twonky Media Server.
  • Is running firmware version 02.41.05-034 and later.

I think that this means that if you upgraded to that firmware and already had twonky then you can choose either server if not you are stuck with the WD server.

Rollback to version with twonky, update to latest, you can then choose the server.
