Disk not showing in Windows Explorer, Failure Checkpoint = 97 from DLD

Hi,

I have Windows7, 64 and use Passport Model Number: WD 2500BMV External

About a month ago I hit it little bit and couple days ago my drive stopped working.

I can see the drive in Device Manager in Disk Drives but I don’t see it in Windows Expolorer.

I read forum and downloaded Data Lifeguard Diagnostics. The drive sometimes shows up and sometimes not.

When I run short test i get this msg:

"Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status code = 07 (Failed read test element), Failure Checkpoint = 97 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2! "

I assume it’s a mechanical failure. Is there a way to restore my data or somehow repair this drive?

I will appreciate any help.

Thanks

MC

Hello,

Have you test your drive using a different computer? Also a different USB cable?

Yes, I tried different computer, didn’t tried different USB cable yet, I will try

I wanted to do chkdsk on this drive but since it does not show up in Windows Explorer it does not have any  drive letter assign to it.

Is there any software that can repair it?

Thanks

I tried different USB cable and it’s same problem.

Is there any good and (best) free software that can restore bad sectors?

Thanks

I don’t know if this will work or not http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk  A lot of people have had good luck repairing corrupt partition data.

Joe

thanks but this program wouldn’t work as my external drive dopes not show in any software programs or windows explorer.

When i try to run program like that I can’t select my damaged drive.

It does show in Device Manager so obviously it’s conected to main computer.
