Disappearing compatible drive list

The WD website used to detail a list of compatible drives for the PR4100, but no longer. WebArchive is our friend - https://web.archive.org/web/20220520052748/https://support-en.wd.com/app/products/product-detail/p/139 - is the latest list that existed before the change of heart.

To my question: Toshiba NAS drives seem to be far cheaper than WD. For non critical storage I am considering a pair of 16TB - https://www.ebuyer.com/1289184-toshiba-n300-16tb-512mb-7-200rpm-3-5-inch-sata-6-gbit-s-bulk-hdwg31guzsva - on spec. What are the chances of these working in the PR4100 in RAID1 - anyone tried?

Haven’t tried these particular drives but I have put in a bunch of other drives which were never listed in the old document. Unlike some other manufacturers, I’m not aware that WD has a “white list” of approved drives in the firmware, so you should be fine.

Many thanks - will risk it. If worst comes to the worst I’ll put them in a PC! Will come back here after to confirm for others’ benefit.

I am right aren’t I in assuming that I can - one by one - rebuild RAID1 pairs by swapping first one then the other of each pair to higher capacity drives (leaving it to do the copying of course between swaps)?

Right - my two 16TB drives arrived to replace the two 6TB drives in RAID1. I figured it was worth a try to swap them one at a time and rebuild, in the hopes that I would acquire a 16TB RAID1 pair. I duly swapped the first - and after about 12 hours I had a good array - still at 6TB (of course - the smaller drive). I swapped out Drive 2 and that is rebuilding, but it still says 6TB despite there now being two 16TB drives. Have I missed a trick? Will this show 16TB after the second drive is complete or am I going to have to bite the bullet, stream the whole to a scratch drive and format this pair separately?

Further to the above, the rebuild is duly complete, and it still shows only 6TB available - although a magic new link has appeared which presumably will allow me to create a “Volume_3” with what’s left. It’s getting unnecessarily complex with Volumes, but by moving things around I can do this and ease pressure. However, I’d prefer a larger single 16TB volume to make life easier if I have a disk failure in the future. Suggestions gratefully received before I bite the bullet and create a further volume.

Answering my own question - I got adventurous and dared to click “Change RAID” - and made my way to an option that allowed expansion of a volume. It looks like I could have done this as part of the disk swapping if I’d known - but no matter - in a short (!) while I’ll be where I want. If moderators want to split this into two topics for others’ benefit feel free.

Glad you got it sorted out.

In actual fact that expansion was a ghost. Lots of whirring and it truly went through the motions, but after two rebuilds and about 14 hours… back to square 1. I opened a support case - and then followed the procedure in Is deleting a volume possible? - #4 by RogerJP

Briefly to answer the original post, the drives are compatible, but look for the “expand” tick early on - before the very first 16TB insertion.
