Differences between 2 nearly identical AVIs

Hi everybody, I got a little problem and I am *sure* you hotshots will solve it in instant !

I have two AVI files, one plays fine and the other doesn’t. Mediainfo shows me two nearly identical sheets, but there are, of course, several differences. Could someone point out what’s wrong with the bad one ?

Thanks in advance !

This one works

Are you sure you have those in the right order?  The bottom one says it’s ASP@L5.

According to WD:  ASP@L5 supports MPEG4.2 ASP@L5 up to 1280x720p30 resolution and no support for global motion compensation.

So, your  resolution is too high.

Thanks for your answer but yes, I checked again just to be sure, and it’s the right order…

I’m not a big fan of AVIs (and never heard of Nandub) so my advice would be to try and remux with MKVmerge (but NOT the latest version – try 4.0 or earlier).  That should solve any glaring errors although, as Tony says, the resolution is a bit off putting.

If it still doesn’t play after MKV conversion there is definitely a basic codec issue.

Or with a current MKVMerge by turning compression OFF on audio and video tracks, is that it ?

Well, I’ll try today (it’s early morning here), thanks a lot !

Turning header compression off, yes.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Hey, I came across this post while experiencing the same problem.  I initially thought that it was due to the differences in files and encoding, until I tried accessing them from a USB drive instead of over our wireless network. Two nearly identical AVIs with slight differences ended up working via that route, where they wouldn’t play previously.

So… looking at networking/sharing issues, I realized this was a Windows 7 issue. All files I already had when I setup sharing were fine, new ones were not. I had to go back to the video folder and re-share the files by playing with the permissions.

Hope this helps

Welcome to the forums.

It’s an interesting idea – we never asked the original poster how he was accessing the files (and he never came back to let us know what happened when he remuxed) but it’s always possible this was the case.

At least in the future we have something else to consider.  Thanks for posting.
