Diagnostic test failed.. is it safe for my files?

Hello, Every time I try to run a diagnostic test I get an error. Sometimes is at 10%, other 20%… other at 90%. The result is always: Drive Failed diagnostic test. My drive is empty, I have restore it already. I’m running the last firmware version. Is it safe to put my files on the drive? After the fail result I have this option to request support (automatically generate a diagnostic report). I’ve tryed that too but the form is not submited to WD… some error on the page. Any help please? If that helps, I’ve ssh enabled.

Hi and welcome to the WD community.

When you restored the drive did you do a quick restore or a full restore ? Try to do a full restore, in case you already tried a full restore and get the same results, i would recommend to contact WD Support since it is not normal to have failures on different percentages:

Hello,

I’ve tried quick restore and full restore. Same result.

No way I’d trust my data to a device that tells me it’s failing unless it was just backups.

But if you’re curious, you can pull a diagnostics report from the HELP screen in the web UI and look at the SMART data results.

Hello,

Yes, it is just for backups but still…

About the SMART data results… are you talking about the smart_info file? Should I search for something in particular?

Maybe this?

Lots of READ FAILUREs logged.

Meaning it’s better to leave it on the side right?

Any way to fix this?

“Right side”? Huh?

Sorry my bad english.

Leave it without use, without files.

Could this be a firmware problem? Any idea to solve this?

No, it’s just like any other hard drive.  When it starts failing, there’s not much if anything you can do to “repair” it.

run smartctl -a /dev/sda and post the results please.
