Lately our WD passport ext hard drives will show “device unreachable” when we try to copy anything to the drive (we have 2 that are relatively new but about half full), however, the drives show up and we can pull an image image up that is on the drives but just cannot transfer to.

I also have the same error when transferring data from PC to the WD portable device. What I noticed is when the drive is active the case shakes often. What worked for me was to pressed on the case with enough force to ease down the vibration when the drive is active. I pressed firmly while the drive was being read and had no error messages.
Try it out and see if it helps!
