Deleting files once backed up?

I bought my my book 2T to store my pictures and other files on so that my desktop would run faster. I am confused to weather i am to delete the files from my desktop once they are stored on the hard drive or if I have purchased the wrong thing. Help please.

Bear in mind that the in order for a backup to be effective, you need to have at least two copy’s of your digital data in two different locations. If one of your drives fails, then you will have your data saved in another drive.

Now, if you just want to store your data in the external drive, and you manually copy the data to the external drive or used the WD SmartWare, then you can delete them from your computer, your data will remain in the external drive.

[Edit]

However, keep in mind that if you delete the data from the pc, you will no longer have your data in two locations.
