i just bought the newest wdtv: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=330 why doesn’t it play my mp4 videos? they are all converted from mkv using mkv2vob. i prefer this type of file because it plays on many of my devices with no need for special software or additional codecs. my tv will play it directly from the usb port, playstation3 works fine, and windows media player plays it no problem. i still want to use my ps3, windows media player, and tv to play the files as well as my new wdtv. so far wdtv is the only one having problems. i have tried powercycling the unit.
here is an example file:

for the specific example above, i solved the problem by changing the file extension to m2ts. changed from “filename.mp4” to “filename.m2ts”
i chose to rename the file because:
-
the video stream is AVC
-
the audio is ac3
-
the format is mpeg-ts
4. the user manual for wd tv says the file must have an extension of m2ts if the above conditions 1-3 are true.
this prevents my tv from playing the file now. it will still play on the ps3 and windows media player
update: i have now solved the issue by finding a common file extension recognized by all of my devices, including my hdtv and wdtv device.
