I have a 24TB My Book that I formatted to NTFS on my Mac via Paragon NTFS. I had a number of issues along the way so I’m not sure if something unusual happened. Checking the drive I see that it has two partitions: the main partition and a small EFI partition. Was this EFI partition always there? Can I safely delete it or are there any downsides?
Yes, the small EFI partition is normal, it’s created automatically during formatting to support system boot processes and partition management. Even though you’re using the drive as external storage, the EFI partition usually stays there. It’s best not to delete it, as removing it can cause issues with the drive’s recognition or future formatting. Since it takes up very little space, it’s safe to leave it alone.
Perfect, thanks for the straightforward answer!
Use diskpart to delete the EFI partition. Note that this will destroy the system’s ability to boot.
