Hi

Friend came to me  to me with a MYBOOK which wasn’t,t responding to MAC or PC. I  removed the HD from its casing and  recovered about 400 files from it.

Among those are a group of GZ files. Double clicking on the first file causes WD Smartware to launch and to show the makeup of what I’m assuming to be the files from his MYBOOK. However the backup and retrieve tabs are greyed out and inaccessible.

Can anyone suggest how I can recover these files. Friend is anxious since some are family photos which he did not make backup copies of.

Hi, Smartware works by making a copy of the files on your computer into a folder called “smartware.swstor”. You can extract the files from the Smartware “retrieve” tab, or you can manually recover the files by exploring the backup folder manually. Smartware will not change or compress the files in any way, so the .GZ files you are referring to were probably copied with the same format from the PC.
