Constant HDD activity on PR4100 latest firmware

I’ve upgraded to the latest firmware and I can hear constant HDD activity on my PR4100. The blue lights do not flash, they seem pretty solid but I can still hear the drives churning for hours. I turned off all access from the outside so I know no one else is accessing my drives. I have owned my PR4100 for about 2 years now and it’s never done this before. I’m worried that this is some kind of bug and my drives will go bad with the constant drive usage.

Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks!

Hi @ActionJackson,

Please refer to the article of How to Auto Update Firmware on a My Cloud:

Thanks for the reply. I currently have v5.18.117. The article you sent says it only applies to My Cloud OS 3 with firmware 4.xx.xx-xxx or firmware 2.XX.XXX

Any other ideas? Thanks!

Hi, I’m also having this issue and it’s been going on for some time. I have 2 PR4100s, Primary backs up to the secondary for data reliability running Raid 10 on both and Firmware version 5.18.117 on both. My Primary NAS is quiet when not being used by me. The backup, I hear disk activity all day long with a short pause between and drive lights are solid. I’ve checked the settings and they are both configured the same with the exception of the installed Apps and Shares.

Thank you

@durhama You may have Cloud Access enabled on the share containing the backup data.

Thanks for getting back but no, Cloud access is disabled since it’s mainly used for Backup. The Primary NAS Mycloud is enabled.

I just solved this issue tonight! In my case I had Cloud Access turned off so I didn’t see the option to turn off optimization. Here are the steps I took:

  1. Enable Cloud Access.
  2. Turn off Optimize Video Playback feature
  3. Turn off Cloud Access
  4. Done

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the advice but I don’t think it’s going to work for me. I turned MyCloud access back on and “optimize video playback” was already disabled so I cycled that setting on/off last night then turned the service off. I’m home from work now and it’s still cycling roughly 30 seconds of activity then 30 seconds of quiet. Problem not solved.

I’m seeing the same issue on my PR4100, and I have only one Cloud user who is actually on the same WIFI doing nothing. Actually I do worry about internet security, but I chose to trust WD. I don’t what the NAS is doing with this continuous spinnings.

My old WD My Cloud 4TB goes to sleep resonably easy.
