Sorry if this has been asked before but i couldnt find anything specific.
I have an EX4100 which has 2 LAN ports. I currently have it setup working fine using 1 port but I want to use a different backup program that will only run on a PC.
I dont want to connect a PC to the network as each backup will just saturate the network so I’d ideally like to use the 2nd LAN port on the EX4100 to connect directly to a PC running the backup software I want. This should mean that the EX4100’s 2nd LAN port and the backup PC are completely separate thus.
My questions are;
- can this be done to start with and if so what IP Address settings will I need?
- I also want the backup PC to be connected to the internet so I can install AnyDesk to periodically check the backup is working, will the 2nd LAN port setup a bridge to the first so it can share the internet or will I need a 2nd LAN card in the PC?
Thanks in advance
The intent of the second ethernet port is to allow higher band width to the NAS such that a single user (using a 1GB connection) won’t saturate a NAS with a single 1GB connection. Of course. . .that means that you MUST have a 5GB or 10GB router* to prevent overall network saturation
What you are proposing is a logical alternative.
HOWEVER. . .the second LAN connection to the PC needs a router to form the network. In essence; you are trying to run the NAS on two separate networks. . . which logically requires two separate routers.
I believe the key is to ensure that the networks are not using overlapping IP addresses.
I do not know; but I strongly doubt the NAS will bridge the two networks.
Does the PC have a wifi card? That can serve as a network connection.
Also, they sell network adaptors that have a USB connection to the PC.
(I personally use a USB docking station that has USB ports, and ethernet jack, as well as video outputs)
