I recently bought 2 WDD Red 2TB NAS drives and tried to install them on my Promise Smartstor NS2600 NAS. I had previously used the normal 2TB Green Drives, and I thought that since my NAS is on 24/7, the new Red drives would be a gem. BUT NO!. The NS2600 would not recognise and accept the RED 2TB drives. And I checked the Promise web site and found out to my HORROR, that the NS2600 is only compatible with the RED 1TB and 3TB drives. NOT COMPATIBLE with the RED 2TB drive. Can someone explain to me why this is so?
You might want to contact the NAS manufacturer on that one.
Could you capture the 512-byte Identify Device information block from each drive? You could use CrystalDiskInfo to do this. Then we could compare the capabilities of each drive.
Have installed CrystalInfo. Where may I find the 512 byte Identity Device Information Block? There seems to be a lot of information displayed.
You need to go to Edit → Copy Option and select Identify Device. Then go to Edit → Copy. This will copy the disk information to the clipboard. Then open up NotePad or whichever word processor ships with your version of Windows, and choose Edit → Paste (or Ctrl-V) to input the clipboard data.
Here is a thread that illustrates what I’m talking about:

Thanks. I had intended to compare your drive’s Identify Device output against the information in Section 7.16.7 of the following document.
Working Draft AT Attachment 8 - ATA/ATAPI Command Set (ATA8-ACS):
http://www.t13.org/documents/UploadedDocuments/docs2008/D1699r6a-ATA8-ACS.pdf
Unfortunately CrystalDiskInfo has a bug. The data in column 5 is wrong – it is repeating the data in column 6.
Ironically I’m the one who requested that the data be reformatted to match the layout in the standards document. Anyway I’ve informed the author of the error.

Thank you for your help. The real issue was not drive compatibility after all. The Promise Technical Support teamviewered into my computer and resolved the problem. It was just a configuration issue. I have two other NAS - a Zyxel NSA221 and a Buffalo LinkStation which were automatically installed upon powering up. For this Promise set, manual intervention was required. I had erroneously assumed that the drives would automatically be recognised and installed upon powering up. My Bad!!! Case closed.
