CLoneing 500 Gig Drives

I tried cloning a WD 500g drive to a WD 500g drive in a USB drive docking station.   After the reboot it hung after displaying the “locking partions status . . .” for the second time with a 0% completion state.

I waited 40 minutes but nothing else happened.   is this a known issue?  How long shoul a the clone process take for a 500G drive (ballpark guess, please)

Thank you,

Cloning a hard drive is going to give you a low percent of success! , what i will suggest you is to install a fresh copy of the operating system and them move the files manually from one drive to the other

The only reason why a clone would be recommended is in the particular case of you having some software to which you dont have access to anymore.

If that’s not the case, then indeed a clean start would be a better idea. However, as far as your issue goes, I would download the DLG Diagnostic and test the new drive to make sure its working fine and redownload/install whatever software you’re using to clone the drives.

I tried the cloning again and it went off fine.  whatever the problem was it appears to be a one-Time problem.

Thanks for the responses

The terms Cloning and Imaging get used pretty interchangably I’m not sure of what the actual difference is. You can restore a Image in 7-8 min if you have a problem like installing bad software. Windows System Restore isn’t overly reliable. I use Acronis True Image 2010 and periodicaly make copies in different places. So it’s not totally about not having software available. Unless you are into slipstreaming a fresh install of Windows means lots of updates need to be downloaded and installed. The same for other software and drivers.
