after upgrading my wd tv live to firmware 1.03.49_V, it wont change the color depth setting. I choose 12bit instead of 8bit, after clicking OK, it says “are you sure you want to change the reosolution”, i choose YES and it stays 8bit.
On previous firmware version this worked well… tried with 3 different HDMI cables. The TV is Panasonic plasma TX-P42G20ES which has 10 and 12bit color depth…
I’ve done the factory reset, pressed the reset button on the side of the box, plugged it off for 10 minutes, re-flashed it with the latest firmware but nothing helps…
When things aren’t working, it’s good for the WD engineers to know, so they can try and fix it.
But the question I keep wondering is why people are trying to switch to 12-bit in the first place?
The display will look exactly the same whether set to 8-bit colour, or whether set to 12-bit Deep Colour, because the video files (and pictures) are all only encoded with 8-bit colour. The 12-bit display won’t look any “better” – or any different at all.
So, if 12-bit isn’t working, sure by all means let the WD engineers know, but then just go back to the working 8-bit, and the problem is gone.
My Panasonic plasma also fails to “keep” the 12-bit setting. You can select it but when it goes back to the main menu it’s already back to 8-bit.
However, like RG says, there’s really no benefit to 12-bit and there won’t be until media is made and distributed in 12-bit. Prior to this update, I kept my unit in 8-bit by default.
Where do you see/set that the TV supports 12 bit? I have a Panasonic G20 too (50"), but I haven’t seen anything of this? Not that I am going to use it (why?), just curious.
