Checking Capabilities for Time Machine Backup from WDMyCloud.local

Recently updated to Mac Sequoia. Can’t add my WD MyCloud 4TB drive to Time Machine. Getting this when clicking “Set Up Disk” : Checking Capabilities for Time Machine Backup from WDMyCloud.local. Running for over an hour now. Anyone else have this problem?

What firmware version is the My Cloud running?

It may or may not help but there are a number of WD Support Knowledge Base articles referencing the My Cloud and Time Machine.

Also make sure to use SMB and not AFP when connecting the Mac OS to the My Cloud. Apple and WD have depreciated the AFP protocol.

The recent macOS Sequoia update might have introduced some compatibility issues between Time Machine and your WD MyCloud drive. The issue you’re describing, where the “Checking Capabilities” process hangs, has also been noted by other users. Here’s how you can troubleshoot this:

1. Manually Add the Drive

  • Open System Settings > Time Machine and try manually selecting the MyCloud drive. If it doesn’t appear, try connecting via SMB:
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Press Command + K.
    3. Enter smb://WDMyCloud.local or the drive’s IP address.
    4. Log in if prompted and select the shared folder designated for backups.
  • Once mounted, try adding the drive again in Time Machine.

2. Check Permissions

  • Ensure the backup folder on your MyCloud drive has the correct permissions. Log into the MyCloud dashboard and verify that the Time Machine user or backup folder is properly set up and accessible.

3. Alternative Recovery Options

  • If Time Machine setup continues to fail, consider using third-party Mac Data Recovery Software compatible with macOS until the issue is resolved.

Let me know if you’d like detailed instructions for any of these steps!
