Change disk for a smaller

Hi since i bouth 2Tb mycloud i didn’t really use very much

i would like if i can just open and use the 2Tb disk inside a USB3 case and use an old 500Gb HHD inside mycloud?

yes, but far from trivial. search for debrick

basicly you need another linux machine to format, partition and install the OS to the 500GB drive

i thought that WD case did new formatting and inizalization :frowning:

are u sure i can use inside disk in a standard usb 3 case?

because i read that some MyBook HHD won’t work outside MyBook case

first post i found

http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/259322-32-book-essential-hard-disk-swap

it is a standard disk but formatted for Linux, it needs to be formatted before use

I have never tried to format a USB connected disk, it may need to be installed internally to format then put in the case.

I am curiouos, why do you want to convert it to a USB disk instead of NAS disk? the basic NAS features seem to work fine.

You need format new HDD in GPT (Not MBR. All 2TB+ HDD formatted in GPT by default).

Full instruction here: (Translated from Russian)

Supported all HDD with sata interface (Tested on 120GB 2.5" notebook hdd  )

Also you can install clean debian or debian+OMV. Read my post about that:

actually i’m moving to a new NAS and i don’t really need 2 nas since i’m a freelance and i use at home

if i sell mycloud to buy a new 2Tb disk i guess i’m just going to wast a lt of time and not getting much cash

so i was thinking to move that disk inside new NAS or in extrernal case that i use a direct storage attach to my main PC ( a mac mini )

i can still use My Cloud with an old 500Mb just to make case usefull

There is certainly no problem with removing the HD from the MC and putting it in a new NAS. I just did that (in a Synology DS213j) since there is only about a $30-40 difference in the WD MC and a new WD Red HD… I thought this made more since than selling on ebay and then buying a new HD.

waiting for a sinology DS214

is it hard to open? did you follow some tutorial or video, because my book are different from model to model

@Fox_exe thanks

I guess i can carbon copy clone ( is a mac software ) WD My Cloud disk to new disk before erase it

Here are two sets of instructions for getting into the MC without breaking it. These methods involve sliding the cover off arather than prying the cover out from the sides… Most of the methods shown will break the clips holding it together…
