I’ve been reading the forums and haven’t found a fix. I’m looking under media folders. I don’t know how to use network shares. It asks me for a password and username when I try to go there. How do I find that?
I’ve been streaming vids to my 360 and other PCs fine I bought this WD player so I could play my mkv files though. Not sure what to do. Is there another player that is easier and more user friendly that will stream my mkv? I almost bought the micca or boxee box. Will those just let me play all my files without having to be a network technician to figure it out?
It’s your PC that isn’t supporting MKV.
The MEDIA SERVER function on the WDTV will only list the files that the server says are available.
If the MKV’s aren’t listed, it’s because the server isn’t listing them.
For NETWORK SHARES, if you have “Password Protected Sharing” turned OFF, then all you need to use is the DEFAULT user ID and password of ANONYMOUS and a blank password.

How do I do that?
Is there an easier way to share MKV files over my network? Thanks.
edit: wait so I can’t use the WD player to watch mkvs?
Password Protected Sharing option is selectable in the “Advanced Sharing Settings” for Windows 7.
If you’re using WinXP, then that’s actually turned off by default.
so I can’t use the WD player to watch mkvs? since windows doesnt view them?
well, I found some instructions here on the forums on what to set my sharing settings to and not only can I not see MKVs but I can’t see my PC with media under media share at all. Nothing. When I go into network shares all I see are the folders where my media is but nothing inside them. I go out and back in to media shares and the folders are gone. Go out and back in and they reappear. Been trying to get them to show for a while now.
So, now I can’t use this to play ANY files. :mansad:
Do you guys know if the Micca player will be easier to use? I really want to stream MKV files but I’m not knowldgable enough to set this up I guess. Is there any way to plug in a media streamer and just watch my files? Micca link below says it has UPnP will that help?. Or maybe Boxee? Thanks guys.

Ok, there’s a couple of things here.
NO boxes will work any differently with shared media if your computer isn’t working right. Yours isn’t working right for both NETWORK SHARES, and currently won’t do MKV via the built-in WMP DLNA server.
So no other box is going to fix that.
If you’re unable to correct the issues with your shared files, then you could use a USB hard drive. Put all your MKVs on there.
Or you could update your Windows box to include MKV functionality (I know it’s possible, but someone else will have to chime in there; I don’t use Windows media player so I’ve not done it.)
Or you could install a different media server package (Twonky, TVersity, etc…) that will serve your MKVs.
Or you could buy a WDTV Live Hub and put all your MKVs on there, and server them to your WDTV Live, because it WILL support streaming MKVs.
Lots of options before you jump overboard…

Not that there’s anything wrong with any of the other answers you gave, but this one I’m qualified to chime in on.
Any of the “codec packs” that have ffdshow and a media splitter, will be able to import .mkv (and other) files into any directshow-capable program, not just into WMP – suddenly all your other programs that don’t support .mkv will be able to use them.
If you just want to play a plain file, all will be ok (but there will be some oddities, like WMP can’t read the length and shows everything as being zero seconds). If you want to mess around with subtitles and other audio tracks, then it can be a hassle running to the PC to right-click the splitter in the taskbar and give it the proper settings.
As I say, any of the “codec packs” (or even just ffdshow & Haali on their own, I think) will allow it to work. At the moment, I’m using Shark007’s codec pack, but they’re all pretty much the same… they mostly all come with the same main helper applications – as long as it has ffdshow and Haali, it makes no major difference what else the pack has or what interface it uses for changing settings.
Just change the file extension of the file from “xxx.mkv” to “xxx.avi”. Your PC still can’t play it, but the WDTV should see it. Works for me.
Good luck-
