Cant see my HD

The portable HD powers up but i cant see it on any computer or my playstation. I dont have another cable to try. PN WDBU6Y0040BBK-EB. Can i retreive my data? How?

That would depend on the underlying issue. As always, if your data is of value to you, it is always best to seek professional data recovery assistance sooner than later.

Things you can try.

  1. Another USB cable
  2. Another computer
  3. Are you able to see it enough on your computer that it can be read with a data recovery program like R-Studio, UFS Explorer, Raise, GetDataBack or some other program? If not, you are done and will need a prof. If so, you might be able to save your files to a new drive using a recovery program.

That said, it is not uncommon for Western Digital drives (especially the portable type) to have head, media and firmware issues that all can provide such symptoms.

There could be various reasons for a drive to become unresponsive or undetected. It can be a hardware issue or some software issue. The external drive may be detected by the system if you connect it to another PC, but it doesn’t respond.

Below are the few possible reasons for this issue:

  1. Corrupt or unstable USB driver
  2. Windows is missing important updates
  3. USB controllers may have become unstable or corrupt
  4. Corrupt USB drive or partition

However, you can still fix the issue and extract the files from the USB drive by attempting the below methods:

  1. Reboot your system - Shut down your system, remove the power cord wait for some time & then connect the power cord & boot your system.
  2. Try different PC or Laptop
  3. Re-install USB drivers
  4. Unplug all connected USB devices
  5. Fix USB root hub

Hope this will help.

Hi,

As you said you can’t see your drive in the computer then first try to make that drive visible in the system in order to get your data back. Because without drive visibility you won’t be able to get your data back. As you said you don’t have another cable to check if the issue is with the cable or not then I would like to suggest you to try to check the drive in another system if you have one.
