Can't disable wdmcserverd and wdphotodbmergerd

Continuing the discussion from How to disable wdmcserverd and wdphotodbmergerd?:

As described in the linked (but locked) discussion I also didn’t succeed disabling wdmcserverd and wdphotodbmergerd.

Stopping the services is possible, but they will be started on reboot and after hibernate.

Things I’ve tried (on an EX2 Ultra with Firmware 2.11.140):

Using update-rc.d:

$ update-rc.d wdmcserverd disable
-sh: update-rc.d: not found

Obviously update-rc.d has been removed.

Adding a job via crontab -e:

@reboot sleep 10 && /etc/init.d/wdmcserverd stop

Nice try, but the file is reset.

Changing permissions:

$ chmod -x /etc/init.d/wdmcserverd
$ chmod -x /usr/local/wdmcserver/bin/wdmcserverd

But the files are executable again after the device was rebooted.

Searching for user-start file:

There is no directory /etc/rc2.d and also no /CacheVolume/user-start file on my system.

Has anyone experienced similar issues or has a solution for this?

Thank you!

Later firmware seems to disable the media service, more or less, give it a try. At a minimum with DLNA Media Server set to off the drive is not as bogged down with the later firmware versions.

I’ve the DLNA Server turned off and when checking for new Firmware (I’m on 2.11.140), it says that it’s the latest.

The device was working for a couple of days non-stop with the fans going quite loud and without going to sleep until I stopped the services.

Also when logging in to the Web-UI, it took up to a minute for the page to respond, now it’s showing up instantly.

That’s why I would like to disable the services, but unfortunately didn’t find a way yet.

Im on wd mycloud Firmware Version : 2.21.119 (latest)
I do experience exact same thing.
My original problem was the cloud is never enter sleep mode
both service is not running by the way (weird), but it doesntt sleep after 10 minutes off no client.
/etc/init.d/wdphotodbmergerd status wdphotodbmerger is not running.
/etc/init.d/wdmcserverd status wdmcserver is not running.

issuing mannualy on ssh with root access /etc/init.d/wdmcserverd stop and /etc/init.d/wdphotodbmergerd stop
solving my issue…wd cloud is sleep after 10mins of inactivity.

Problem is that, I cant find the way to disable both service, as you do.
We both suffer from the same problem and no solution yet…that I can find using this firmware.

thanks

I’m still using an EX2 on firmware 2.11.169 which as of Oct 09, 2017 is the latest.
Over the 4 years that I’ve had this puppy, the ability to maintain a Win 7 network view in Win 7 Explorer WITH an external USB attached has deteriorated to the point that I can no longer attach either a USB 2.0 1TB or USB 3.0 4TB external unit and maintain stabiltiy (both are WD MyBooks)
When I first noticed the network connection in Win 7 dropping off completely with the older 1TB MyBook (USB 2.0) attached I thought I might be because of a firmware update (have had auto update on all the time). Tried stopping wdmcserverd and wdphotodmergerd and it did stabilize a Win 7 network connection -for a while. Then about 6 months later it (stupid me didn’t keep any correlation records as to drop-offs relating to firmware updates) it dropped off again and stopping the two demon daemons would no longer stabilize it. At this point I bought a new 4TB MyBook (USB 3.0) and attaching it produced NO instability and no Win 7 network drop offs. Thought, hmm is this a USB 2.0 vs 3.0 problem? Actually got into a converstation with a WD Tech Rep on the phone and he swore that the firmware right from the first release was NOT sensitive to USB generations. Now I’m experiencing dropoffs with the newer 4TB (USB 3.0 unit) and like the 1TB unit before I can no longer stabilize it by stopping the daemons. Because as has been previously mentioned ‘update-rc.d’ is no longer available on the versions/distros of Linux on these EX2-EX4 boxes it seems very difficult if not impossible to disable wdmcserverd and wdphotodmergerd. Mining the WD Forums again today I noticed a post from 2014 that mentioned a solution for disabling the two by of modifying the two scripts by adding a new line to each file with ‘exit 0’ immediately after first line with ‘#!/bin/sh’. I did this using SSH in WinSCP then rebooted the box by powered it down and then back up. SSH’ing back into the box again revealed that they had been restored to their original state and my edits were gone. So what init or other startup process rewrites these files? Most of the discussion now seems to be (naturally I guess) focused on the newer MyClouds so I wonder if anyone is still trying for a solution to stabilize EX2-EX4 so that USB externals can be mounted and have the box stay stable?

Just a further question to the crowd:
The workaround for fixing the mindless indexing and thumbnail creation services which has been working for 3 years on this EX2 which is stopping wdmcserverd and wdmcphotomergerd right after a reboot of the EX2 suddenly doesn’t work anymore on the same 4TB WD MyBook which HAS been working and was being served up and visible on my house LAN with no problems. Suddenly yesterday morning this 4TB disappeared from the LAN. I have again gone through multiple attempts at rebooting , stopping the aforementioned services, then plugging the external drive. Initially after the reboot sequence it shows up in Win 7 Explorer but then fails and disppears from the LAN after about 5 minues… Now here’s the real mystery. Taking another external drive, this time a 2TB WD Passport (which are also USB 3.0) and plugging it in is successful and it stays stable, not disappearing from the LAN. So what goes wrong with a particular EX2 and external USB drive combination. I had the same thing happen on the same EX2 box with an older 1TB WD MyBook external drive. Worked for about 2 years flawlessly gaving good data rates and serving up music and movies through the EX2 over the LAN with no problems. BTW, all these external drive still work flawlessly plugged into a USB port on my main tower with ASUS board and Intel i5 CPU.
