Due to the fact that the Public folder is reachable for every user in the network without any chances of protecting it with a password, I am trying to create a new password protected folder.
Unfortunately it does not work and I do not know how to do it!???
My software is 9.8.0-102 and dashboard (see attachment!) looks pretty simple without any possibilities to create new folders …
What you’re seeing there (“Lokaler Netzwerkzugriff”) is basically the only kind of “protection” My Cloud Home offers for folders.
Here’s the important part:
My Cloud Home doesn’t support multiple password-protected shared folders like a traditional NAS. Instead, it works around user accounts, not folder-by-folder security.
So WD expects you to secure access like this:
Set a local network username + password (exactly what your screenshot shows)
The “Lokaler Benutzername” and “Lokales Passwort” are used when you connect through Windows File Explorer.
If someone opens something like:
\\mycloudhome\Public
Windows will prompt them for login credentials. That’s basically the built-in “lock.”
Create separate users for private storage
If you want files that others can’t see, add another user in the dashboard. Each user gets their own private space.
Folder-level passwords aren’t possible
So you can’t really do “Folder A locked, Folder B open.” The system just isn’t designed for that.
Best workaround for sensitive folders
Store private files inside an encrypted container (VeraCrypt, BitLocker, password-protected archive) before uploading them.
Quick question: are you mainly accessing the drive through Windows Explorer, or just through the mobile/web app?
