it keeps saying THERE WAS A PROBLEM CONNECTING TO THE SERVER

Can you access the My Cloud using the Mac Finder?
How were you attempting to connect the Mac Time Machine to the My Cloud? By the My Cloud name or by the My Cloud IP Address?
Have you read the My Cloud User Manual (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=439&type=25), Chapter 4 Backing Up and Retrieving Files, Using Apple Time Machine?
try this first:
OS x Finder for accessing the share: Finder > Go > Connect to Server > smb://my-device-ip
Or replace my-device-ip but my-device-name.
