Can't backup to the WD

I can copy individual files to the WD Element external drive, but when I try to back my computer up, I get the message

“One of the backup files could not be created.  Details:  The request could not be performed because of an i/o error.”

Is there a way to fix this?

An input/output (I/O) error can be the result of communication issues between the disk drive and your system. First, I would recommend changing the USB cable, then proceed to test the unit sector by sector using Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows, as explained in the following link:
