Can't acess mycloudUI only twonky server

HI there,

I recently mande a full factory reset on my 3TB WD MyCloud, and then he asked me to make firmware update.

Made the firmware update, and rebooted the device. And then my problems started…

Can’t reach the mycloudUI, i can only reach the twonky server.

In WD discovery in detects media server (twonky) only. when i click in configure, it will go to 192.168.1.99:9000 to twonky server.

In the WDMyCloud software it also detects only twonky server, with 192.168.1.99 IP (like before) and an SN like 7.0.6 ??? and it won’t allow to move forward from here.

If i search 192.168.1.99 or mycloud/UI in browser it won’t find the page.

Tried reset button for 4 and 40 seconds and the light won’t move from dark blue, switch ETH port in router, unplug and plugin again, WD SmartWare and universal firmware updater with usb cable, ant still nothing.

After searching some foruns saw something about (fake) UPDATE through SSH but after reset SSH is disabled (i think)

What can i do to solve this problem… don’t know what to try next :frowning:

Regards

So it is very possible the scans are taking up most of the cpu time of your device.

If it the light is blue and you can get the twonky server, then the device is ok at the 192.168.1.99 ip; which means it is busy doing the media scans.

After a reboot, immediately see if you can get into the menu. Just keep hitting refresh a couple times during the boot up and turn off some of the media indexing and media access. This will stop your scans for the time.

Alternatively, try to SSH into the machine. If it has been deactivated, try getting into the menu after a reboot and turn on SSH, however I know that WD has disallowed SSH during the reboot, so if you get a message to wait when you SSH, keep trying until you get in.

If you do get in with SSH… then turn off the scans.

/etc/init.d/wdmcserverd stop

/etc/init.d/wdphotodbmergerd stop

Yes, everytime you re-power your cloud (turning off and on), you will need to SSH in and stop the scans.

This should fix your menu problem.

Lastly, if you are ready to throw the WD out the window… then a 40 reset is as follows; you need three hands!

  1. unplug the device

  2. push in the pin

  3. while holding in the pin and the device with the other hand, take your third hand and plug it in (don’t drop it)

  4. count 40 seconds.

  5. now release the pin and put the device gently down.

The white light will stay on for about 3 to 6 or even more hours. Don’t unplug it, don’t do the reset thing again (I did) go play a round of golf.

When it turns blue, it should be good to go.

Now SSH into your machine and turn off the scans (steps above).

Hi there Raphael,

Thank you for the fast reply and detailed troubleshoot.

Currently i’m at work and will try one (or both) of the given sulotions.

Now i realise that i wasn’t 40sec resenting properly.

Despite i have no data in the hard drive, in case that i did, my data would be all erased am i right?

Let’s hope i’ll be 1 less frustrated user by tomorrow

I will then reply the result of your solutions.

Thank you!

ok, with your additional information several things…

  1. a 40 second reset will not erase any data but will reset all your shares and users. I think this is what the white light is doing during the 3 to 6 hours; running through all your files and resetting your users and ownerships on the files. Just guessing because when you recreate your users and shares, this process begins which is wild, is every file is then set to the

new owner and user.

But yes do try to do this first now!!

  1. if you have no data on your drive, then there is no media scan thus your problem is the firmware update itself which means

  2. you may have to try to re-install the firmware via SSH… if you can SSH into the device…

or

  1. lastly call WD support and they will have to RMA the unit… or if you can get a exchange from where you bought it, do try it that way first because WD RMA basically trades your new shiny broken Cloud for a USED Refurbished Cloud, probably from another unlucky user like yourself.

  2. you are not alone in your frustrations. Most of us arrived here in some manner looking for answers. This cloud device is a black box that test everyone alike.

Got the UI back, logged in and turned SSH on and and to leave.

Thank you for all the help… you’re a life saver

You’re not WD staff but you surely should be!

Mission acomplished, 1 less frustrated user!

Now let’s explore this beauty!

Thank you very much Ralphael!
