Can't access files

I have a WD My Passport Ultra which I used to backup my files from my laptop.  A week later, the HDD on my laptop died and had to get it replaced.  Since my laptop came automatically with a preinstalled version of Windows 7, I also had to order a Windows 7 startup kit from Lenovo.  

After I booted my new version of Windows, I transferred all of my stuff from the external harddrive onto the laptop, but now I can’t access the files.  Everytime I try to open a doc, picture, video or music a dialog box opens up saying that “user doesn’t have privelages”.  

I am not really sure what to do…I have tried going through Properties > Security > and allowing for access that way, but it doesn’t seem to work.  Does anyone have suggestions?
