Cannot play movies over network share

I can view and select all my movies / files when connected to network . Issue : whenever I select a movie (all Mkv) It will not play at all, I basically get a blank screen. Set up is external hardware connected to my laptop. Shared by everyone read / write. Thanks for assistance
