Cannot access MyCloud Home Duo over wired network?

Hello, I have had this MyCloudHome Duo for about 4 years, and it has worked pretty well. We had a storm a couple months back and lost power and internet service for a week or so. When power came back, internet was still flakey for a couple weeks. During this time, I noticed I could not access my Duo over my wired network during internet outages. I read the operations manual, and (if I understand it correctly) that is to be expected. My question is: Why do I need an internet connection to access a device over a wired network? I gather the wired connection is used only for the Duo to communicate with the web, but that seems a bit weird. That means during internet outages (which happen here too often) I cannot access by stuff.
