Can only access my World Book Ed II (White Light) via Safari, for a short time. What to do?

I have a My Book World Edition II full of lovely content, but am having some serious problems with it. Sadly, I’m not really sure what process to follow to try and fix it.

Repro steps:

  1. I connect my NAS directly to my laptop via ethernet, then power it up.
  2. I can access my NAS via Safari (OSX El Capitan) upon booting it up. This is very very slow, and only works for about 10 minutes max. After that, browser actions always time-out.
  3. I can see my NAS folders in Finder, but never succeed in seeing any content.
  4. I have tried to update my firmware, but this always times out after many hours.

In short, I’ve nearly given up on the device, even though the drives are a-ok. I’d like to buy a Synology NAS, moving my drives over. I realize I may lose data in doing this.

Can anyone advise on how I should approach this problem? I do also have a 1 TB external drive. Maybe it can be an intermediary backup?
