I have had a WD my book backing up my computer for a while. My computer blew up over xmas and gone in the bin. I have bought a new computer and copied files from my book successfully. However, I can’t use it for backing up the new pc - can I reformat it and start using it again with the new pc? or does it have to go in the bin?

You should be able to just reformat it. Remember that will wipe out all the data on it. Look on the WD site I think they have a format tool.
