Can I make a Bootable Drive on a WD My Passport for Mac external drive?

I have a new MacBook Air, my first Mac, and I am getting ready to do my backup.  I have ordered the My Passport for Mac USB external drive, but now I am reading online that you can not put a bootable drive for Mac on the WD external drives.

 

I am not the most computer savvy person, but I did a lot of research before I ordered the WD external drive.

 

So, Is it true that the WD external drives can not be used to boot a Mac whose HD has crashed??

Booting from an external drive is not support by WD.
