Problem: WD Elements Play will show MIXED - SHORT (8.3) and LONG - filenames when BROWSING media.
Tested with Firmware 1.01 and INTERNAL HD (NTFS), on a browsing list of +200 folders.
Why WD Play will not use the LONG format filename in every folder name puzzles me.
I haven’t seen a single SHORT filename on mine, and I have about 1300 files on it.
Your firmware is 1.01.x what? .03 or .10?
I have the same issue on my Elements with file names.
It seems quite random, renaming the files does work but then the unit spontaneously decides not to display them properly again!
I’m using the latest firmware 1.01.10

Not sure if this is related, but I get some files put in the file list at random.
Example: Files named like
Albatross
Baboon
Coyote 01
Coyote 02
Coyote 03
are shown as
Coyote 03
Albatross
Baboon
Coyote 01
Coyote 02
WD Elements looks at the SHORT FILENAME but presents the LONG FILENAME. When there are MANY files that cannot be represented by a UNIQUE short filename, WD Elements presents the Short Filename instead of the Long one.
Ex:
this.long.file.names.start.with.the.same.prefix.1
this.long.file.names.start.with.the.same.prefix.2
Will show:
this.long.file.names.start.with.the.same.prefix.1
this.l~2 (or close enough!)
So, this is related to the WAY that the Elements SORTS, finds, catalogues (whatever…) the folder list.
My question is… what happens if i disable de SHORT FILENAME feature on NTFS???
