Blu ray to MKV

I have read many pages on the Blu ray to MKV subject and spent a few days converting files and to no avail.  I can play them on my computer but not on my WD TV Live Plus.  I use AnyDVD HD to rip the Blu ray to my HD.  Then I use Handbrake to encode it making sure to use the Regular: High Profile preset.  I next Go to the video tab and choose MKV file under the container.  Finally under audio I pick the AC3 passthru.  I can not play any of the files with my WD TV Live Plus.  Does anyone have any idea what it could be.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you don’t have it already, download and install MediaInfo from here.  Run and then post the results.  Must be an issue with how you’re creating the MKVs.

I stream full uncompressed BR main movies from my NAS to my WDTVLive + and they play great.

Here are the results after a fresh Blu ray conversion

The WDTV only supports MPEG-4.10 (H.264) MP@L4.1 and HP@L4.1… it doesn’t support HP@L5.0

Handbrake 0.9.4, or any of it’s nightlies didn’t use L5.0 for the “High Profile” preset.  They must have changed this for 0.9.5.

I guess we’ll have to change our advice.

I just finished ripping another copy of the same episode but the only thing i changed was the container and left it as MP4 File and it plays stright to the WD TV Live + just fine.

Well, I just downloaded 0.9.5… when I tried a DVD with “High Profile” I get HP@L3.0.  When I tried A BluRay 1920x1080 with “High Profile” I get HP@L4.0, like I always did.

You perhaps changed some other setting that pushed it into L5.0?   Because I can’t seem to get Handbrake to make L5.0 files by using the stock settings for the “High Profile”.

Is it possible that I somehow saved the profile so that when it loads I get the new “modified” profile?  Still very new to using Handbrake.

Ok, I just woke up and I can see why it went to L5.0… your height is greater than 1080.

it needs to stay with 1920x1080p24, 1920x1080i30, or 1280x720p60.

Ok thanks for the info i will try a rerip when I get home from work and let you know how it came out.  Thanks for all the help!

You guys are quick.  I was going to look at the video profile as a potential culprit - good work RG.  Another interesting note, and I don’t know how it will change after you change the profile from 5.1 to 4.1, but the aspect ratio looks odd.  BR in 4:3?  Not sure why they’re not 16:9 other than the fact that your “height” is 1440 - which would make for 4:3 ratio (1920/1440).

One last note, I’ve never seen a mediainfo listing with so much “■■■■” in the header.  Mine are much cleaner and don’t have anywhere near as much superfluous information and advertisements.  Don’t know if that’s bothering the WD.

Anyway, looks like you’re on the right path.

I believe the profile bumped up to L5 instead of L4, as soon as the height passed 1080.

That would be from the “Picture” settings on the first tab.

If the BR has it stored anmorphic, the actual 4:3 “display size” should be 1440x1080 instead of 1920x1440.

My 4:3 DVD’s end up with a “Display Size” of 640x480 if I choose strict anamorphic (which is correct).  If I change the width to 720, then the height climbs to 544.  Same idea… you increase the display width to match the anamorphic source, and the height climbs.

He did say “next episode”… I assume these are 4:3 TV shows.

Sometimes HB gets confused and choose a larger screen size. I’ve experienced it with a single BD,which gave something like 1088 in height or so (and it couldn’t play).

You can fix it a one of the first tabs, but it takes a few tries to get the right mixture of settings to keep the correct aspect ration … unfortunately I don’t remember the right settings :frowning:

Cocovanna

You are 100% right it a A Blu Ray of the old Justice Leage series so that is why it is 4:3 aspect ratio.  I just walked in the door from work and have to leave again in an hour so I will start a fresh copy of Handbrake and see what it initally comes up with.  Unfortantly I can not check this page from work :frowning: too many fire walls and restrictions there.  Thanks for all the great info and I will let you know how it turns out.

Roofing Guy: “If the BR has it stored anmorphic, the actual 4:3 “display size” should be 1440x1080 instead of 1920x1440”

What Blu-rays have you seen that are anamorphic?  I believe that all Blu-rays are 16:9 and then you would set the inside picture area pixels.  Then the pixel setting would be 1440x1080, which would be a 4:3 image on Blu-ray.  An anamorphic 2.35 AR movie on Blu-ray would be about  1920x817.  It’s similar to the old “letterbox” DVD’s before they started to make them anamorphic.

If you look at the BluRay Specs, the picture data can be

  • 1920x1080  59.94i, 50i  16:9

  • 1920x1080  24p, 23.976p  16:9

  • 1440x1080  59.94i, 50i  16:9

  • 1440x1080  24p, 23.976p  16:9

  • 1280x720  59.94p, 50p  16:9

  • 1280x720  24p, 23.976p  16:9

  • 720x480  59.94i  4:3/16:9

  • 720x576  50i  4:3/16:9

Figure 3-3: http://www.blu-raydisc.com/assets/Downloadablefile/BD-ROM_Audio_Visual_Application_Format_Specifications-18780.pdf

Picture data of 1440x1080 is anamorphic 16:9, by definition, unless it’s intended to be 4:3 material.

I’d actually meant “Unless the BR has it stored anamorphic…” instead of “If the BR has it stored anamorphic…”

Wiki’s take on it (for what that’s worth to you ):

“Unlike DVD, Blu-ray supports resolutions with Source Aspect Ratio (SAR) of 16:9, so widescreen video can be displayed non-anamorphically, with square pixels (a Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) of 1:1). Blu-ray also supports anamorphic wide-screen, both at the DVD-Video/D-1 resolutions of 720×480 (NTSC) and 720×576 (PAL), and at the higher resolution of 1440×1080 (SAR of 4:3, hence a PAR of 4:3 = 16:9 / 4:3 when used as anamorphic 16:9). See Blu-ray Disc: Technical specifications for details.”

But ya, sometimes Handbrake spews out the wrong picture size… especially after you’ve just encoded (or queued) something else with a different size or A/R.  Usually when you get the picture size correct for the first encode, it will stay correct for the remaining encodes that session, if I remember correctly, when it’s a bunch of eps off the same disc.  I’d guess that a 1920x1080 encode had been done previously, and Hanbrake got “stuck” on a width of 1920 for the 4:3 encodes.

RoofingGuy:  I’m aware that they “could” make anamorphic Blu-rays, however, to my knowledge nobody (commercial movie Blu-rays)  has made them.  If they did, it would make up for the lost resolution when they make Blu-rays of Cinemascope movies that don’t use  the full height of the 16:9 resolution of 1920x1080.

I encoded the same file I have ben trying to get to play lastnight on the WD TV Life + still using the methoed in my first post then after it was finished I changed the container to MP4 and encoded it again.  To my suprise it played perfectly then I encoded an episode of Hogan’s Heros and did the same one as a MKV and MP4 and the same thing happened.  It played the MP4 with no problem keeping in mind that Hogan’s Heros is standard 640*480 and the Justice League was 1440*1080.  I will pist the media info for your inspection

First the MKV file of Justice League
