I run Mac OS Big Sur and have a WD My Cloud (Gen 2) on firmware 2.41.116 (the latest for my model).
I would like Mac OS to automatically connect using SMB3. It automatically does it over AFP.

OS X support for SMB 3 is still flakey at best
AFP is the usual Apple network protocol
Hello, @eldon you might want to try the right subforum… either OS3 or OS5. Here is about My Cloud Home which is a different (and less capable) product.
What version of macOS are you running? How do you see that AFP is default?
I am running OS5 (I believe it’s compatible with My Cloud (Gen2)), despite some rough edges, SMB is working pretty reliably (but for Time Machine). If you don’t use Time Machine, I believe you could turn off AFP (I believe it’s still needed for Time Machine even over SMB).
@Vegan SMB is default on macOS since 2013 Mavericks (10.9):
SMB2
SMB2 is the new default protocol for sharing files in OS X Mavericks. SMB2 is superfast, increases security, and improves Windows compatibility.
