Hi,
my environment:
-
WD TV live Beta 1.03.38_V
-
Synology 107+ (firmware DSM 2.3-1157) as DLNA Digital Media Server (DMS), over 10.000 MP3 files
The Synology is correct listed as media server and I can browse through all the media content provided by the media server … except the SEARCH function does not work!
Regardless the current view when browsing through the media content provided, pressing the SEARCH key gives a choice like
Title
Album
Genre
(this is the simplest DMA (Digital Media Adapter) style you can configure at the Synology box).
Available SEARCH operand is “contains” but regardless what I do, the result is always
Search completed. No results found.
Any ideas? Has anyone a DLNA DMS connected to the WD TV live and SEARCH is working?
Thx in advance,
JimKnopf
I think SEARCH only works for local storage. If there’s no local storage, you’re going to see “No Results,” because there are none.
Again, I think this is the case, not certain. I don’t think the DLNA protocol has that capability to allow for searches…
Reading the manual I think you’re absolute right. It sounds like the SEARCH function very depends on the so called “Media Library Compilation” which is simply restricted to USB devices at current (where the Media Library is located in the ".wd._tv folder under the root directory of the USB devices).
So we have
-
a working SEARCH function with USB devices
-
a blocked SEARCH function with network shares (that’s really ugly; even if it would take much longer to create the Media Library on network drives, it’s not of a big use to try to use hundreds or even thousands of media files without a search capabillity.
-
an offered SEARCH menu while browsing through the content using a DLNA Digital Media Servers … without any function (at least that should be blocked here as well).
Well, will try to create a thread in the ideas lab to address the missing SEARCH function for network shares and DMS:

Jim, I’m feeding my WDTV with a Twonkymedia Server 4.4.17 running on my QNAP NAS. I remember that I did a succesfull search on this DLNA Server lately…
I will check it again this evening…
Cheers,

An idea for NETWORK search has been there for a LOOOONG time.
The problem comes to the point that SEARCH is accessing the Media Library, not the file content. On network shares, there’s a good possibility such a file won’t exist. (Like on mine, I have my shares READ-ONLY, so it can’t possibly create the .wd-tv tree.)
Without a reliable place to store the library, I can see why that functionality is just not there, and wasn’t written in.
People then suggested “Well, make your volume READ-WRITE.” Well, that would make sense… unless you have TWO WDTVs on your network.
Who owns the library? Who guarantees to keep it synchronized? What happens if two units try to access it in WRITE mode simultaneously?
See, the logic gets pretty complex.
Well, I checked it again and it works with my setup.
So, to answer the initial question of this thread: YES, I have a working DLNA DMS where search is possible.
Tony, you are right, when it comes to Network search via SAMBA. But that was not the question if I got it right.
Cheers,
Zap
