Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice on managing backups and storage more efficiently across my devices (PC and mobile).
Right now, I’m using a mix of local storage and cloud options, but it’s getting a bit messy to keep everything organized and properly synced. I’m exploring different storage solutions to simplify the process and make backups more reliable.
I also came across some discussions and guides on different storage tools and cloud options, including resources shared on terabox, which helped me understand a few alternatives better. Still, I’m not fully sure what the most stable and secure long-term setup would be.
What do you personally use for backups and storage management? Any suggestions or real-world setups that work well with WD drives or cloud services?
Cloud with monthly fees: I don’t see how that is a viable long term backup strategy, as if you miss one payment - - - all the backups disappear. Are your passwords in your will for your next of kin?
It is messy to sync. my nominal method is:
All data on an external drive.
Sync extrnal drive to a NAS periodically (once a month at least)
Archive the external drive and put all data a NEW drive periodically. (This prevents data corruption from wiping out ancient files)
Periodic sync external drive to another external drive that is not normally in the same geographic area (200km away) as the backup NAS. This if FIRE, THEFTand NATURAL DISASTER protection.
The big thing I’d add is that syncing is not the same as backup. I’d use a simple 3-2-1 setup: keep the working files on your PC or phone, make an automatic backup to the WD drive, and keep a separate cloud copy, ideally with version history. For Windows 11, I’d also enable File History or Windows Backup for the files that matter most. Most importantly, occasionally unplug the WD drive and test restoring a few files because a backup you’ve never successfully restored is only a theory. Avoid making one cloud service such as TeraBox the only copy, especially for important photos or documents.
