Automatic software update error "Unable to connect to the remote server."

Having this problem whenever there is a tray notification that an update and eventually receive this error.

Maybe your firewall if blocking the smartware, have you checked on your firewall settings?, you can also download the update from WD’s site.

No, that doesn’t appear to be the problem as I have added WD Smartware to the allowed pass thru firewall program list.
