Anyone using Time Machine over SMB?

I see that the most recent My Cloud update (4.05.00-315) enables Time Machine to work over SMB. Has anyone tried this? How’s it working? Has it been reliable? Faster/slower than over AFP?

Also, I’m curious how the WD team enabled this feature. From what I can tell, Time Machine support in Samba is still a patch that hasn’t been folded into the main code (in other words, it’s experimental). Also, another post on this forum mentioned that the version of Samba in 4.05.00-315 is still pretty old. So did the WD developers apply the experimental patch to an older version of Samba for the My Cloud?

I’d love to move to SMB but feel uncomfortable trusting the sanctity of my data to a questionable Samba version. What do you guys and gals think?

I want to know also. I asked how to setup TimeMachine using SMB and was told to mount the Time Machine share, setup time machine on the Mac. My question is does it have to be mounted all the time or when a back is needed. So confusing…
