Anybody knows if it is possible to use animated GIFs for the background at homescreen, instead of normal JPEG’s?

why don’t you try it yourself,
load a gif animation on the hub and set it as background…
okidoki… can try it at weekend… will do 
From the manual
„ GIF (Animated GIFs are not supported)
and
GIF gif LZW (loss less) 2048x2048 For animation, only supports 1st page
