Aftermarket firmware error

I had the same exact problem As this guy http://community.wdc.com/t5/Firmware/Aftermarket-firmware-warning-loop/m-p/116878/thread-id/8918/highlight/true

And now I’ve lost some functionality. What gives, WD??

The error is:

Warning! This media player was modified aftermarket and is running unoffical firmware that is not support by Western digital.

Now my content info won’t work, and my USB drive says it’s empty even the when I look under the FILES page it shows the drive as over half full.

I’m flabbergasted.

The reason I rolled back my fw in the first place is that the “auto update” failed and kept telling me that there was new firmware but wouldn’t let me update it via auto updat or USB update. So, I downloaded a downgrade from WD and now I’m in this predicament.

So you got that warning after using WD’s OFFICIAL Roll-back code, or did you instead install the GPL firmware?

Both.  I got the rollback message and tried to cancel so I could figure out what was going on.     But NO LUCK.  It installed the GPL thing anyway and now my is all messed up.   I went and found the proper/current firmware and put it on and it’s just funky.   Lots of things don’t seem to work  and I get that message now every time I restart the box.

 Super bummed.

So let us get the sequence of events right-

  1. You downloaded the GPL code from here- http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=1010&sid=134&lang=en

  2. You ignored the warning on that page that says-

Warning! We recommend using firmware released by Western Digital only. Using third party or user-modified firmware may cause malfunction and will void your product warranty. Once you install third party or user-modified firmware, even if the product is rolled back to the original firmware from WD, access to certain features will be disabled.

And followed by-

Description

The zipped file contains the source code for third party copyrighted software licensed under the GNU General Public License (“GPL”), which software may be used in WD TV Live Hub Media Center. A copy of the GPL may be found below or at http://www.gnu.org/.

  1. You then unpacked, discovered and flashed the GPL firmware from this zip download. Ignoring the warnings during the flash process.

  2. If you did this then as the warning says-  even if the product is rolled back to the original firmware from WD, access to certain features will be disabled.

And if you are thinking that WD should not be posting this download, then understand that they are required to by virtue of the GPL license that covers a lot of the software.

I guess, in you hurry to be petulant, you didn’t read what I said about trying to cancel it when the warning came up.

No not petulant (definition here- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petulant)

I just carefully read what you posted and there are several inconsitencies in what you say. I just asked if you proceeded along the sequence I documented above. Hardly petulant to ask this.

But it seems you tried to apply the GPL code. You screwed up your device. You did not heed many warnings.

So, sorry I do not have a lot of sympathy.

What I did was googled “WDTV LIVE HUB FIRMWARE” and got a Western Digital site.    ON that side it said “Don’t use 3rd party software”.    Ok…no problem, since this is a WD website, I should be good to go.    Guess not.

The site should have been far more clear.    We are just normal Joes.  we might not get **bleep** a GPL is.  Now our $200 box **bleep** and it’s because…the box failed after I initiated the auto firmware update process and I tried to fix it.

It’s just kinda lame, just like the guys who are on here saying “na na na na naaa naaaaa…you didn’t follow the ruuuuuleeess”.            I was just trying to fix my box.

“3) You then unpacked, discovered and flashed the GPL firmware from this zip download. Ignoring the warnings during the flash process.”

In fact, at this point, I thought…uh oh…something’s not right here…and tried to hit BACK.    To no avail.

So, right away I found and installed 2.10.17.

Now my USB1 won’t let me change or get CONTENT INFO.    Strange.   But it seems like everything else works just fine.   It’s shame, since the Content Info is one of the reasons I bought the WD.

Just lame, that’s all.

Rollback message?   What’s that?   There are no messages when using Rollback code, other than the normal Firmware Update prompts…  Nothing about Rollback flashes up any warnings, nor should it, because Rollbacks won’t cause any loss of functionality (well, other than the functions that you’re leaving behind for older firmware…)

So, I really have no idea what you’re getting at.

Please point me to the exact link for the firmware you FIRST downloaded.

Problem solved.

Rolled firmware back to original release fw.

Then upgraded to current.   No more messages and all functionality works.

Tony and Pornflott, thanks for your help!  I couldn’t have done it without you!
