I have a DX4000 4 bays with 2x2TB WD Enterprise RAID1.
I would like to improve the NAS capacity.
After asking many other users, I bought two WD RED Pro 3TB with the intention to create a new RAID1 volume.
Unfortunately, with great disappointment, I discovered that WD Red are not compatiblewith DX4000.
Now, after consulting the compatibility list, I need to switch to the Enterprise series but, to avoid another flop, I would like to know if I can add 2x3TB WD3000F9MZ-76NVPLO for creating a new RAID1 volume or I have to stick on 2x2TB WD2000F9MZ-76NVPLO, like the ones already in my DX4000.
If you add another drive ( one or two) it will go to raid 5. It will not do two Raid 1’s
In all honesty if you need more capacity with just NAS/Storage functions I would look at geting new hardware. WD has many options starting at ~ 160.00 for diskless units WDBVKW0000NCH
Since the DX4000 is headless and built many years ago it was design to be “simple” Meaning it would make all the choices for the user. two drives is raid 1. If you add anymore drives it is supposed to autmagicly convert to Raid 5. There is no hot spare option, they all go raid 5 over two drives. WD also placed very strong restrictions on what drives could be used so this process could be guaranteed to work. But as time has passed these drives are no longer available.
You need to describe whast you mean by remote access to a MY Cloud. If you simply mean get files from afar then yes. If you are using Remote Web Access in the DX to get to your desktops, no
Some of the 4 bay NAS units may let you have two Raid 1’s but you get more space and the same failed drive protection with Raid 5
There is nothing at all wrong with Raid 5 on the DX4000. The only problem is finding drives that will work.
The only other product(s) WD currently offers that have the remote web workplace and client backups are the DS 5100 and DS 6100. But in my opinion they are expensive. But they are good boxes. They have a separate 2.5 drive(s) for the OS and video out, so they are not as prone to some of the problems we have with the DX4000. They are also running the latest and greatest Server OS, 2012R2 Essentials
If you just have one desktop to remote to you could forward port 3389 to it, or use team viewer etc.
sorry for the continous demanding, but you are for me the only reliable font for information on this topic…
First of all, the dealer that sold me the two not compatible WD Red Pro is ready to change them for a pair of WD2000F9MZ that, according to the WD compatibility list, should be compatible with my DX4000 and its installed WD2002FYPS, letting me go for RAID5 and 6TB capability.
My only concern is that the present drives are already more than two years old and, considering the interconnection among disks in RAID5, I would feel not so confident as with a RAID1 configuration. By the way I use the NAS just for backup copies of my files, so a failure would be not so catastrophic…
A more expensive, but good alternative, could be to buy two WD4000F9MZ, as substitutes for the present WD2002FYPS in a two drives RAID1 configuration, with a 4TB capability.
They are on the compatibility list but indicated for DX4000 16TB.
I suppose that it shouldn’t be difference between my DX4000 8TB and a DX4000 16TB, am I right?
Let me know what you think about the two choices and thanks again…
the 2TB drives available are WD2000F9YZ and the 4TB available are WD4000F9YZ. The 2TB are not on the compatibility list, the 4TB are, but for the DX4000 16TB (DX4000 8TB is not indicated, but I think that there is no difference betwen them). What do you think?
You would think that adding a 4tb on the list would raid 5 with just 2tb used combined with your current two 2TB drives would give you a raid of 4tb. Raid will only use the maximum of the smallest drive. You in that scenario would end up with 4tb useable and 2tb just wasted.
All that said, I think there is a thread here that said the 4tb *did not* work with the 2tb box. I kinow folks have used the 3tb drives in place of 2tb and just did not get to use the “extra” one TB but the same did not happen with the 4tb
Now, I do not have an answer if you remove the two 2tb drives and rebuild the box from scratch with two 4tb drives. Though there is a thread in here somewhere about editing whitelist and all that stuff. You wiould think it would work, I just can’t say for sure.
WD is missing the boat by not offering someing like the Thecus W2000. You could put your WD red’s in it. Have remote web access, client backups etc. Only cavet if you can call it that is it must be or see a Domain Controler. You can do a regedit on the desktops to skip domain join for Windows Pro versions though
