Acer netbook fails to recognize WD dual USB drives

My Acer netbook, AO721-3574 does not recognize My Book Essential dual USB drives.  The netbook has USB 2.0 ports, and is running a Windows 7 Professional 64 bit operating system.

I plug in the wd drive and nothing happens.  I did discover that by using a USB 2.0 hub it is recognized.

I plug the hub into the pc , the drive into one of the hub ports and the drive is recognized.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is it an Acer problem or a WD problem?

The drives work fine on my Vista 32 bit desktop, as well as on a Windows 7 64 bit notebook.

Thanks

Bob M

If it’s a USB powered drive the netbook probably doesn’t produce enough power.

The usb hub has a power adapter, if needed, but is not needed for the WD drives…  These WD Essential drives are large  drives. and have their own power supply.

Try this. Disconnect all the devices attached to your netbook. Remove power connector & battery.  Wait for two minutes. Connect the battery and reboot. Now connect your USB drive directly to USB port on the netbook.

if this works, update Acer chipset drivers.
