Access My Book Live across internet without WD2GO

Is it possible to connect to MyBook Live’s public share across the internet without using WD2GO from a mac?

Perhaps using “Connect to server” and AFP ? to the admin account

Hello,

Yes, you should be able to connect to your computer and that way you can see the drive using AFP

AFP uses a different port number - Port 548 - so you will need to make sure you have setup port forwarding in your router.

Thanks ragdexx I forwarded port 548 to the WD Book Live and on the mac did a “connect to server” with the command afp://admin@ext.ip.address/Public

This works fine.

Yep, it does work fine.  I’m connected to it as well.  :)

Well, it will work, but as far as I know, TCP 548 is not a secure protocol. In a few words, it is not encrypted. If security is not a concern, it is fine.

The only secure protocols are SSH, https and IPSEC/VPN.

Is Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) safe to run directly over the Internet?
