Access denied to WD My Book from new desktop computer

When connecting the external hard drive to my new desktop computer I was able to retain the old files.  The hard drive is backing up the new files, it seems.  When trying to open the WD-backed files from my new computer’s desktop I get an “access denied” message.  --My new Dell is running Windows 8.1.
  How can I gain access?
