Hey all,
I have a thought I want to throw out there to see if it a possiblity.
1 WDTV device in each room (3 rooms) all connected via powerline ethernet sockets to a central router that has the media hard drive hooked up to it.
Why?..so each of my boys can pick their own movie of a night without having to have a harddrive for each room.
Is that a far fetched idea or a possiblity?
I had a look at d-link dhp-309av as a powerline solution…any good?
Thanks for any ideas, answers, or light shedding!
as long as all the rooms are on the same circuit that will be ok (my last house had 2 circuits and the powerline ethernet only worked on one side of the house)
If it supports either Network sharing or Media sharing (DLNA) of the content on the attached HDD … then that should be OK.
Personally, i’m using a WD MyCloud connected to my router which works fine. (can watch content on many different devices … SmartTV, WDTV, Raspberry Pi, Tablet,Phone,PC etc)
Cheers…building a new house and trying to work out a solution without resorting to hacking into walls or getting cat6 installed…the cheaper and easier option that may work…lol
Agree with Joey, you sound like a candidate for a NAS; a drive system connected to the home network via the router. Some ordinary drives connected to a router can be persnickety, and a powerline adapter can have plenty of issues; especially for video. Don’t recommend either. A decent dual band router is pretty necessary.
Here is link to WD collection of NAS devices from most basic to most elaborate.

disagree … have been using a Netgear XAV1004 for about 5 Years with No Issues (Amazon Review)
(only issue was, shonky electrical wiring at my previous house)
I would highly recommend a Wired Ethernet Powerline Adaptor instead of WiFi any day of the week.
