Hello Everybody
,
I’ve got a strange little problem over here.
I recently switched two 30GB IBM DTLA Drives (used them in an RAID1 Array) to 2x WD3200AAKS to also run them in RAID1.
For some strange kind of reason one of the drives drops out of the array every 2nd cold boot.
I make use of the ATI/AMD RAID Controller that came onboard with my ASUS M3A79-T mobo.
Another Pair of WDC 160GB Enterprise Disks are running fine as RAID0 since a few years.
Before, the DTLA Drives also did.
Do you have any suggestions?
Kind Regards,
McK
Caviar Blue line is only suggested to work on software based RAID configurations and may be kicked out on a RAID controller, or so goes WD’s Web site. It seems that Blue drives are unable to properly handle a RAID configuration if it is a physical one, as they don’t have the TLER feature to avoid being kicked out, they need help from software.
If I were you, I’d go for Enterprise drives (RE line) or disable that Blue RAID or verify if there’s a software available to keep the drives under control.
I hope it helps.
Well… I’ve seem to been confused by the advertisment:
Desktop / Consumer RAID Environments - WD Caviar Blue Hard Drives are tested and recommended for use in consumer-type RAID applications (Raid-0 / RAID-1).
So I’ll go for SW RAID as it will do the trick for me too.
I also got confused on that one, I had to call WD to clarify and yep, they told me it’s only software based.
I also gave the small suggestion to update that info on the website! I trully hope they do!
O.k. Problems solved over here…
After installing a new Graphicscard, one of the drives also dropped from a software RAID1.
Then it didn’t even show up in the devicemanager.
So I checked out the voltage connectors and voila:
The connector of the dropping harddrive had a hairline crack and was a little wiggly.
Now, after choosing another one, everything runs fine.
Even on the AMD onboard RAID controller.
