I have a 2TB Ext HDD 1021 that recently stopped being recognized by both Windows & Mac machines. The drive appears in Disk Management as a physical drive but not as a volume. It says it’s an active and healthy primary partition but I can’t access the drive. Similiarly, the DiskPart utility sees the disk but not the volume. I’ve tried to find the partitions using Find and Mount software but nothing appears. I’m now running WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics which have to date not shown anything unusual - everything has passed so far. The drive is on and spinning as well. Do I have any options for finding and recovering the data?
Hello,
Let me ask you a few question to better assist you.
-
what’s the drive file system?
-
In Disk Management do you see the drive unallocated?
The drive is allocated and the file system is not listed. I imagine it was NTFS as I don’t recall ever reformatting the drive although it was readable by both my PC and Mac. Perhaps it was exFAT or FAT32 for read/write on both PC & Mac. Is there a way to check in terminal? I looked at DETAILS in DISKPART. The location path is unavailable and I don’t see anything regarding file system.
Any solutions? Any one?
Please.
Just wanted to let everyone know how I solved my problem.
I had reformatted the drive some time in the past to Mac OS Extended. This format isn’t even recognized by a Windows machine. The drive therefore appeared as a physical drive but not a logical drive. Connecting the drive to a Mac showed the drive just fine. So… if your drive is behaving strangely remember to try to connect it to both a PC and Mac. :stuck_out_tongue:
