I can see my passport in various other places like device management and safely remove device, but cant read, write or use my hard drive.

Well,if you are able to see the drive on the various location then have you tried to format the drive? If yes what is the exact error message do you receive? and if you are not able to format the drive and throws up error message the try to diagnose the drive using Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows.
